Holder
Mabel sighed as she leaned back into her chair. Staring at the wooden ceiling above her, she pulled the brim of her hat over her eyes and wondered what she was doing with her life. Being a Holder was by no means, a bad job. She made a decent living; it put food on the table, and it paid for her house —she really couldn’t complain. It wasn’t as if she hated her job; it was a little unpredictable and business was unstable, but it was never boring.
Names
And what is a name, exactly?
Upon giving a name to a thing,
You give it meaning,
You give it an identity
It’s an arbitrary meaning.
Formed completely by a delusional mind
There is no logical reason for calling a shoe a ‘shoe’
Just as it is illogical to call a man ‘John’
Or a woman ‘Jane’.
Common sense is not so common
And it is simply
Just
Unreasonable
And yet, we value meaning so much
Why? Why do we get so defensive over mere names?
Because it is a means of validation?
It reflects our sense of self?
To place such importance over such irrational systems
Of words that hold meaning not in itself,
But by others.
Is our worth proven by our own arrogance?
By giving an object a label,
Do we show our dominance over said thing?
I simply don’t understand.
